The story concerns two men who advertise themselves as follows: ‘Retrospective destinators – Messrs Hancock and Breeze offer a discreet service as makers and menders of damaged or incomplete reputations.’ The idea was suggested by a friend who told me he was all in favour of identity cards provided that every time the card came up for renewal, one had the option of changing one’s identity. This is what the story is about, but with this crucial difference: Hancock and Breeze can only change their clients’ life stories posthumously.
